Bulbs aren't just for Christmas, of course! What are your wants/needs throughout the year?

There are a few different types of light bulbs, each important in one way or another. Become familiar with these different types and learn when to use them. There are some that everybody should know about, others that may seem more foreign to most. Take a look at these five and learn more about them.

INCANDESCENT

The incandescent light bulb is usually the least expensive option and thus is most popular. There is a warm element to this light, and it compliments most skin tones. This light can be used for up to 1,000 hours, but is not as energy efficient as some of the other options that are out there. They do have dimmable versions available.

HALOGEN

The halogen light bulbs are another variation of the incandescent, although there are a few key differences. These will give off white light, which claims to be the closest representation of natural daylight. These bulbs are often dimmed, and can be more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. Because of this they tend to burn hotter, and run more expensive. These lights are popular in recessed lighting, and under cabinet lighting.

FLUORESCENT

The fluorescent light bulb is known for a flat light that gives a bluish appearance. There are many types of these basic fluorescent light bulbs available for consumers; each has its own advantages. For most, the CFLs are the better option. There are dimmable versions of these bulbs as well.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS

More commonly known as CFLs, these consume a fourth of the energy that incandescent light bulbs will. In addition to this, they will last much longer as well. Because there is mercury in the product, additional steps should be taken when disposing of this light bulb as opposed to others. These may be initially more expensive, but will save you money over time. Again, there are also dimmable versions of this bulb.

LED

Light-emitting diode, also known as LED light is very energy efficient and will last for long period of time, but it cannot be used in place of every lighting supply. Instead of using diffused light, they will give you directional light, making them perfect for specific task lighting but not for illuminating a whole room. This is something to consider, in addition to the high price. There are a few different light bulbs that are available, each one different. Dimmable LED's are also available. Take a look at the advantages of each for your situation. In most situations, you will have more success with the energy efficient models. Even though they are often initially more expensive, their benefits will last longer in most cases. Take this into account when making your decision.
